Top of the stack: Red Hood!

Hey all, a mighty stack of books this week! and at the top of my stack is Red Hood: the Lost Days #3.

Red Hood: the Lost Days follows Jason Todd, the Robin that was murdered by Joker, and his return to the DC universe. The time gap between his resurrection and actual return recent batman arc's is quite significant. The story opens up with Thalia (Gul's Daughter) finding a zombie like Jason wandering the streets. His mind seems to be gone but all his physical skill is still intact, if you attack him he will defend himself. Her plan is to return him to her beloved Batman who she knows is deeply scarred by the loss of Jason. She decides to throw Jason into a Lazarus pit hoping to bring his mind back...but she's surprised when it in fact works but the newly aware Jason is only hell bend on making Batman pay for allowing joker to live.

She's made a huge mistake and is now trying to stall Jason, by finding him teachers in the art of death, from completing his mission.

The book as been absolutely fantastic! Judd Winick should definitely get back on an ongoing Bat-title because his work with Jason's character is perfect. In this series you'll learn how he felt after being brought back, and then witness his road to return, and why he operates the way he does now...and also how he got the skills to do it. Although the entire return of Todd is a resurrection of a significant death in Batman's history I think he makes a great villain!

Sixth Gun review

So what happens when you take, the Pinkerton Detective Agency, western lore about a mysterious pistol and a tree that seems to grow only hanged man. You'll have yourself a great book put out by Oni Press by Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt.

Now as far as indie comics are concerned this book is where I feel that all indie books should be at. Solid line work and really great colors and a story that pops. If you're into westerns and are familiar with any of the sort of the spaghetti western type stuff, this book is a scream!

Cullen Bunn's writing is at a point where He doesn't go for cheap laughs or easy thrills he's actually working on making a book that's better than just your standard 'one hitter quitter' Ie. Most Mark Millar Books.

Brian Hurtt's art gives the book a very vibrant and solid feel. It has almost Mignolga esque coloring wise, but color isn't the oly thing this books got going art wise. Great sequentials are all over this thing giving it the sense of drama and weighty camera angle that the western is so known for. Which is no easy task.

Now on the whole this book is relatively new so there's a lot of room either way for things to go up (which i think is where it's going) or down. (not so much) I know this summer has been big for a lot of crazy good super hero stuff coming along, but if you're looking for a change of pace this book fills that need.

Best Coming Last Week: Uncanny X-men #523

Yo folks, it should come at no suprise that Uncanny X-men #523 was the best coming last week!

The story continues as hope and Cable try to hook up with the X-men while being hunted by pretty much every mutant hating organization in the universe!

Check out the great pencils by Dodson! Look at wolverine giving Cyclops his respect, a current trend that i'm really digging.

Cable and Hope try to fight to survive. The story has a slight Terminator (Hope = John Connor) vibe to it, but damned if it isn't a good use of the idea.

Great moments where you thinkg they are safe, but end up having to run again.

And if that ain't enough to get you to pick up the book...i guess i'll have to revel one of the bad guys...how about Bastion??? the super Sentinel/Nimrod hybrid mutant hunter?!?

Second coming part #1 has sold out already, and second printing has been announced. So if you missed out let Heroes World staff know you want in on 2nd print, and in the meantime scoop up Uncanny #523 while they last!

Best Comic Last Week: X-men Second Coming #1

So in a week where Blackest Night #8 hits...i'd have to say somehow X-men Second Coming #1 manages to beat it out and become...THE BEST COMIC LAST WEEK!

While i may be bias as the X-men have been my all time favorite comic property...EVER! It was a REALLY good read. For those of you that don't know since M-Day (see House of M TPB) there are less than 198 mutants left on the earth. And since M Day there have been NO mutant births since..except for one child, known as Hope. Cyclops the current leader of the X-men believe her to be mutant kinds savior and sent her, along with Cable into the future for safe keeping (see Messiah Complex TBP). And now they have returned.

Now is the mutants darkest hour, with their population rapidly diminishing, survival from extinction rests on the shoulders of Cyclops! You see Cyclops has achieved what Professor X, Apocalypse, Magneto, and many more could not...he has consolidated all the power of the mutant population. Cyclops has become the leader of essentially the entire mutant race! Which is totally badass! he's cold, he's smart and he's kicking ass and taking names. He's the Batman of the X-men. He's willing to do whatever it takes to save his race.

Including sanctioning the team known as X-force to do alot of dirty work...re: killing folks that need to be killed! check out this action spread!

This issue seems to move so fast, it's crazy...so much ground is covered, and even if you have't read previous X-men stuff you'll be caught up quickly. Also wicked art by David Finch helps as well. This is probalby one of the coolest panels ever...the X-men being teleported into action.

Second Coming is the 3rd part of the Messiah Complex trilogy (Messiah Complex, Messiah War, Second Coming) and will take place over the course of 14 chapters that will spread though out the X-title line up...if this is any indication of the series then it will be one hell of a ride!

Upcoming hype: The Expendables Comic

Probably the most anticipated movie ever...okay maybe only by me...will have a 4 issue comic prequel in May! Written by Chuck Dixon and art by Esteve Polls.

I've read a little more about the movie, and it sounds like my kind of movie for sure...and hopefully all you action fans will like it as well. The comic series will showcase the team at an earlier time than we'll see in the movie.

In interviews Dixon points out that Dolph Lundgren will possibly steal the movie (he's plays a team member that was kicked out and will be a villian)...which sounds awesome!

You can see my previous posts about how much i love Powers...and just this little panel here you can see how creative they get on this book...and graphic! I mean check it out, he get's kicked though a freaking panel and wailed on afterward!! nutso!

Best comic 3 weeks ago: Powers #1

Wow, i can't tell you how good this book is! This is one of those books where truly anything can happen. Powers is basically about cops in a world of super heroes, Christan Walker is a detective in the homicide POWERS division, so he deals with murders and deaths involving the super powered.

This is the all new powers starting anew at #1 and here is issue #3...and man was this a great climax to the series so far...first two issues were so really good set up by bendis, who i will admit can run wild with dialogue sometimes, but man this was worth it, this issue was definitely a wicked pay off.

If your a fan of shows like The Shield, or the Wire, Sopranos, etc you'll love this book! where else can you see panels like this?!?

Best comic 2 weeks ago: Siege #3

First off...AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!

Next we get Thor vs Sentry!! oh yeah!

and then add on the return of real deal Ironman?!?

Easily the best comic 2 weeks ago! and if your not reading The Siege...your way out of the loop! it's the return of Captain America, Thor and Ironman power houses! Norman Osborne has gone nutso and decided to take Asguard (thor's land). So far Ares has fallen...and fallen hard, he won't be around for sometime because that death was pretty clear.

Best comic last week: Secret Warriors #14

Now we're back up to date! The best comic last week was...SECRET WARRIORS #14!! oh yeah...why aren't you reading Secret Warriors? first off it has Dum Dum in it! oh yeah, he's back.

It's got crazy twists!

The art is absolutely phenomenal! check out this page!

For those of you not in the know...aka the non-cool people...Secret Warriors follows Nick Fury and his band of Secret Warriors, a strike team he put together to take down hydra...who has apparently been pulling Shield's strings from the begining...oh wait...there is even another force pulling hydra's strings! can't wait till the next issue.

allllll right, that gets us back to speed! what will be the best comic this week??? hmmm, it'll be tough, because Blackest Night #8 hits! also stay tuned for a new edition of "Aww...your bones!"

Best Comic Last Week: Wolverine Weapon X #11

SORRY GUYS, LITTLE LATE IN TRANSFERRING THIS POST TO THE BLOG! SO IT'S BASICALLY LAST LAST WEEKS BEST BOOK!

So the best comic last week yet again features more return of Captain America action!
This time it's two of marvels oldest (age wise that is) characters hitting up a pub crawl!! The issue has some really great moments where they deal with caps death...of course wolvie plays it off like it's nothing...stating in fact that he was there for Cap's first "death", a very nice touch.

Now Jason Aaron has this wicked ability to throw in some sillyness and make it cool as hell. Enter Deathlok in a terminator like role, looking to eliminate key players in current time line. Great use of an older character!

Wolverine Weapon X has totally delivered on being it's own wolverine book and it's story arcs like this that will really make the book. Jason Aaron has become one of my favorite Marvel writers as he seems to know we're dealing with comic books here so he throws in just the right about of "out there" ideas but keeps it grounded. If you like this book be sure to check out Ghost Riders: Heaven's on Fire that just hit in TPB this week!

"Awww...your BONES!" Moment: Secret Warriors #13

We got a saying here at Heroes World. It's based off this old video game called Ghouls 'N Ghosts from Capcom. You play a knight running around and when get hit you lose your armor, and then the next hit kills you, turning you into a pile of Bones instantly (some how your skin and everything just disappears). Hence the store phrase "Awww...your Bones!" indicating that you were brutally killed!

Here's our first installment from Secret Warriors #13!

Apparently when you join HYDRA, you never want to be an agent sparring with Baron von Strucker. Here some poor agent gets Satan Clawed to the face.

For those of you not reading Secret Warriors follows Nick Fury and his team of commandos along with his new Secret Warriors. So if your into a more espionage style super hero team (think The Unit with superpowers) then this is the book for you. Written by Hickman and wicked at by Caselli.

Best Comic Last Week: New Avengers #62

Best comic last week...easily New Avengers #62. Not only did it feature loads of Spider-man 7 Spider-woman action, but it also featured Steve Rogers back in action! Steve and Bucky side by side dealing with the Living Laser...and then add Luke cage to boot!

The book also features some of the best reactions to the return of Cap...something that was sorely missing from the Reborn series. Also loving Steve in the Black Ops style gear.

Immonen does a wicked job as usual and you got Daniel Acuna filling in for the Spider-man action. AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!

Beat Comic Last Week - Batgirl #7

okay, so i might not be exactly last week, but i'm a bit behind here. Anyways, the best comic last week was...BATGIRL #7!

i know you maybe be shocked to learn but there is some serious darkness going on in regular batman titles as of late. Batman, Streets of Gotham and Detective are fairly dark. Red Robin is basically old school batman, and Batman & Robin is actually getting a little complex...but we have Batgirl here to bring in some light fun.

The attitude of the book is very similar to early robin and nightwing titles. You have Steph and mentor Barbra Gordon (original batgirl) trying to carve their place after the loss of Bruce. This story arc we actually get Batman and Robin in the title as well! And the very fun Batgirl and Robin Team-up! Damion and Steph's interactions are worth checking out alone.

so the best comic last week for me was Daredevil #504...the unknown Siege Tie-in...and probably one of the best Siege related titles to hit

Here's what's going down in the latest issue #504:

For those of you that don't know, Daredevil is now running the HAND (oh yeah, that super secret ninja assassin clan)...and Matt has decided that the folks of hell's kitchen aren't going to take it anymore. He's declared that cooked cops and HAMMER are no longer welcome in Hell's kitchen, and that any criminals will be dealt with Ruthlessly. This pretty much sets in motion war between Norman's HAMMER and Matt's HAND

Hey all, I'm often asked what's on my "list". Well here is one of my favorites, it's POWERS! Written by Brian Michael Bendis and art by Michael Avon Omening it follows the adventures of Christian Walker, a homicide detective in a world of super powers. The series definitely has an adult feel to it as sex, drugs, violent deaths, and strong language are a huge part of the book...think F/X network type shows like The Shield and Sons of Anarchy. It's not your typical book which is why i like it, almost anything can happen within an issue. The series has recently begun anew with Walker partnered with former Internal Affairs officer Sunrise, it's a great jumping on point for new readers and I highly recommend it!

Dunno if everybody heard...but apparently Dan DiDio will be taking over writing Outsiders in January! And he'll be teamed up with superstar artist Philip Tan...who I must say is getting better and better. Their run starts with issue #26 out in January and with creative team claiming they are huge fans of the series let's hope it's a good run.

If you haven't been reading Red Robin...then you have no excuse now! New Artist Marcus To joins the team with this issue. Here's a quick recap of what's going down, Red Robin aka Tim Drake, aka Robin, is on the hunt for Bruce Wayne, yeah he believes Bruce is still out there. The latest part of his plan is to join a little group known as the League of Assassins run by none other than Ra's al Ghul. The book does a great job of showing how Tim Drake should have been the next Batman! He's cold, calculating and extremely skilled. I'm not knocking Dick Grayson as Batman, but Tim Drake would have also made a great replacement as well.

Hey all, sorry i've been falling behind on the blog posts (i think i'm going to have to enlist some help soon!), i'll try to keep up this week!

Well some of you may have seen commercials for a new upcoming TV show, entitled Human Target! While this TV show is based on the brilliant DC Vertigo series of the same name. It follows the life of Christopher Chance...someone i like to call a reverse assassin, meaning if you find out your life is in danger he takes your place until the assassin reveals themselves and then he takes them out with his mad skills! By taking your place i mean he really takes your place, he assumes your entire identity so far to the point that he is forgetting who he is, which is the great twist in the book, his struggle to continue his work despite the fact that every time he takes a job he looses some of himself in the process.

While the TV show is going a more action route...looks like he's an extremely skilled bodyguard of some kind, it's nice to see even a hit of this great book in a TV show. The series is available in TPB so pick them up if you want a good read!

This is quite possibly one of the simplest games to play and packs a mean fun factor, and it gets even crazier when you get up to 8 players!The concept is simple...you are adventures, Indiana Jones style! You enter the temple to search for loot, and you only have two options on your turn: continue searching the temple or head back to camp with whatever loot you've found. During each round (there are 5 rounds) you will flip a card in the deck, after each card is flipped you divide up all the treasure, if the card is a trap you get nothing...turn over two of the same trap and you loose all your loot! Only the brave will venture deep into the temple and get the most loot, but are you smart enough to stop before losing everything?!?! How far will you push your luck? and if your the last adventurer in the temple you'll get all the loot instead of sharing!

This is a great game that anyone can play! Each game only takes about 15-30 min and it's all for the very affordable price of $24.99!!

DD #501 is out this wednesday. It marks the start of a new era for DD as we have new writer and art team taking over. Andy Diggle has taken over writing chores from Brubaker so he's got some big shoes to fill. But if you've been reading his Thunderbolts and The Losers you know he's got action down on lock! Roberto Del La Torre takes over in the art department and it looks pretty good so far, his style will fit very well with DD.

If you haven't been reading up till now, this will be a great jumping on point but i do recommend you go back and read some older Daredevil cause it's been soooo good! The current arc is that DD decided to cut kingpin out of his deal to become the new leader of the HAND (ninja clan) and decided to take the deal himself! Marvel seems to be giving Daredevil's writers chances to take DD where ever a good story will follow so this looks like it's going to be a fun ride!

Be sure this book is in your pile on Wednesday!

Smallville returns for yet another season, this time promising to be much bolder and perhaps darker?!? Check out Clarks new digs:
Clark shuns his civillian persona after the events of last season. Now I was a huge fan of smallville though the first couple seasons, why it was inspired by one of my favorite series, Superman For all Seasons (Leob & Sale), and then i saw it's steady decline into sillyness....there were a few steps towards it's former glory...introduction of Lois Lane and Oliver Queen come to mind, but it's since become vary hard to watch. But this new season i'll give a chance and hope we'll see it come back. I know it looks like they're trying to blend Batman and Superman with this new season, but if that's the closest we'll get to a Batman show then so be it, and i'll hope for the best.

Smallville begins again next Friday, Sept 25. With the Metallo (Brian Austin Green of Terminator fame) showing up in the 2nd episode Oct. 2nd. I guess they wanted a villian to tie into the Superman/Batman Public enemies (Sept 29th)?

Looks like DC is overhaulin' the Superman/Batman title. Their new goal is to bring past story lines into present by shedding extra light on previous story arcs involving the duo. Their examples are Emperor Joker and Worlds at War story-lines. Not quite sure how their going to do this but it might be a more successful then their current out of continuity formula. Look forward to seeing this happen and what they do with it.

New Product lines!

I'll only be doing quick blogs this shortened week, cause I'm busy working on some new product lines! Hopefully ya'll like!

First new line are...Bandai Gundam Model kits, more specifically the Gundam 00 line in 1/144 and 1/100 scale! Yes that's Gundam Double Zero, if you haven't heard of it, it's the latest Gundam Animated Series that has been airing the in US on cartoon network. It's Gundam set up for the next gen with a very modern terrorism element to it, also fans of Gundam Wing will find it somewhat familiar with it's retooling of the universe. The action is fast and furious, the mechs are slick and it's done in stunning HD! We'll be carrying the kits in the next week or so for you fans of the show, or just fans of wicked mechs! The kits are mostly snap together, and most have rubber joints so you can pose your finished model however you like...you can choose to paint the model, or not as the plastic pieces come coloured in the proper colours...also you can simply get a Gundam paint pen set to add some details.

The second line is the WWII Miniatures game FLAMES OF WAR! Done on a smaller scale than other mini games this one is historically accurate in every detail. All the tanks, troops, planes, etc exist in real life and were used in the wars. Models a unpainted but don't require too much work to be presentable, a start kit (pictured here) will cost you $49.99 and comes with everything you see, you can also get a complete army for around $200-250. You can play small battles with just a few tanks or large scale battles with full armies. So if your a fan of historical battles or just enjoy a great minis game! you should see this on our shelfs in about 2 weeks!

Hey all! hope ya'll had a good long weekend! Now the bad news...due to the holiday weekend new books will be delayed by a day, making this weeks Thursday the new release day.

Crazy stuff these black lanterns are pulling...we all know bruce wayne, dick grayson, and tim drake lost their parents right? well what guess who was or is going to be risen as black lanterns to neutralize the famous bat family?!? oh yeah, you guessed it! And then add Deadman to boot!
Green Lantern Corps #40
Blackest Night has the midas touch...and it just makes good titles even better! Ever wonder what is happening at ground zero of the Blackest Night event? well this is it! Kyle and the rest of the corps are dealing with a whole mess up in space where the black rings originated from!

Thunderbolts #35
Written by one of my fave's, Andy Diggle, this title just rocks! Espionage, action, villains galore, this book has it all! What happens when Osborne's team of villans starts to question where this mad man's agenda is going and how will it all come crashing down? and what happens when some villains aren't even villains? this book is just too good to miss!

X-Men Forever #7
Oh yeah, i'm a big fan of this Classic style x-men series. Written by X-men veteran Chris Claremont it picks up where his original run left off, creating a tangent x-men universe that has a very retro feel. You miss your x-men wearing bright and colourful costumes? you miss that classic team? this is the book for you!

Yeah so there's a Danny Ketch Ghost Rider mini-bust made by Bowen Designs...and well i want it! One of the characters that was around when i first got into comics...yeah yeah i know alot of you will be like "but Johnny Blaze is the greatest!" and while he's great i thought Danny Ketch was a great ghost rider and i most remember this spikey modern costume.

The bust is due out in October 2009 (but Bowen is always late) so if you want one let us know cause you ain't getting mine! It should be around $69.99

As you may or may not know we here at Heroes World love street fighter, and we also love local comic studio UDON Comics and they awesome work on Street Fighter Comics! You ever been a fan of something and wish you could actually work on it? well that's what Udon studios did! they all love the SF brand and it shows in their work.

Street Fighter II Turbo is a very fun book that is really true to the SF characters we all know and love. And the ART is FANTASTIC! Art by newcomer Chamba is a sight to behold, the sense of action is incredible!

Hey everybody, we just had another super successful board game night yesterday (Thursday)! So i thought i'd post some pics.

The first game was Long Shot...yeah that's right it's a game about horse racing!

And for those of you that don't know what the deal is: Every Thursday we have board game night, and all you have to do is come in and play some board games! it's that simple. We have games at the store you can try or your welcome to bring your own to play. There is no charge for board game night (although we do ask if you happen to need any board games if you could so kindly purchase them from us) and all you have to do is show up!

As an added bonus we're opening every Saturday in the month of August to board gamers so come on out!

Luke Cage Noir

So last week in comics we saw Luke Cage Noir #1 and it was good stuff! Taking place during Prohibition-era Harlem it's a great romp into the whole noir genre...and it does such a good job with Luke's character i actually thought i was reading his actual origin instead of a noir book. Also Tombstone shows up and he's badass!

Red Robin!

DC just released some images from Red Robin #6!!

Red Robin is all part of the Batman Reborn Saga, and you'll follow Tim Drake's (Previous Robin) quest to prove Bruce is still out there. Drake has grown into such a great character especially during the final events of Batman RIP. He differs from Nightwing who is more of a lighter Batman where as Tim was becoming a very dark and goal oriented like the original Batman. He's alot colder and ruthless in his pursuit of "acomplishing the mission" very much like batman. In the last issue of Red Robin, Tim was seen calling up old batman nemesis Ra's ah Ghul.
If your not reading Red Robin and your enjoying the Batman Reborn stuff i highly recommend you check it out!

Batman Arkham Asylum - Demo out tomorrow?!

Hey all, rumor is that there will be a Batman Arkham Asylum Demo out tomorrow (August 7th)!!

Anticipation is high on this new game, being the first game that is based purely on the comics and not a movie or cartoon franchise. Will this game do what Dark Knight did for super hero movies and show everybody that you can make a good licensed game?! Let us hope so!

Demo is rumored to be out August 7th with the actual game scheduled for August 25th.

for real? yeah apparently! Fan favorite Deathlok will be returning to Marvel in his vary own 7 issue mini-series. Slated to set place in the future where 'Lok will be all on his own (no other marvel U heroes running around) in a world where military combat has become entertainment...very "Running Man". Written by Charlie Huston of Moon Knight fame and hyper realistic artist Lan Medina of Punisher fame, this promises to be marvels premier Sci-Fi book. Word is that the story was written and completed a year ago and that 6 issues will already be in the bag by issue #1 hits...will marvel actually release all issues on time?!?

With characters like Ghost Rider and Punisher carving their own genres i hope this one will be just as good!
